In Norway, Poland, and across most of the EU, an audit firm cannot provide accounting or advisory services to a company it also audits. The conflict of interest rules apply across the entire network - not just the local office, and not just in the country where the audit takes place.


This means that if your audit firm handles statutory audit for your parent company or any entity in your group, their offices in other markets may be locked out from providing accounting support - regardless of geography.


Most companies discover this mid-process. They reach out to a firm they have worked with for years, confident in the relationship, only to be told the engagement is not possible.


 

Why the separation exists

The logic is sound. A firm that both prepares your accounts and audits them cannot review its own work with genuine independence. EU audit legislation is clear on this: if a reasonable third party would conclude that independence is compromised, the engagement cannot proceed.


Large audit firms manage this through internal conflict-of-interest checks. Before accepting any new engagement, they search their network for existing relationships - across geographies, legal entities, and service lines. If a conflict exists, the answer is no.
